Alistair’s Notes
I’ve tried to add as many details as I can find in the reference material in order to capture something of the claustrophobic nature of life on a war cruise. A few of these include:
- scratch-building the folding tables, offset to starboard
- scratch-building the sink unit in the galley, including the three taps (hot and cold freshwater and cold sea water)
- wood-paneling the officers section using scale wood decal sheet
- adding various boxes to the ceiling and bulkheads
- adding the inspection and lifting tray for the battery room (accessed through the two traps in the floor)
- making a cast of the door to the control room, drilling out the original and placing a plaster replacement in the open position
- making the toilet from oven-dry putty and filling the remaining space with tins and other packaged food goods (I’m depicting the boat mid-way through a cruise, so they are down to tinned bread!)
- making a decal to represent the distinctive Kreigsmarine bedding
- modifying various figures from Preiser, CMK and even Airfix (the steward collecting the dirty plates was an E-boat crewman in a former life!) and positioning them across the scene
- adding the obligatory bucket, used when the Type VII was too deep for the heads to work (I’ve left it empty – one has to draw the line somewhere!)
I’ve really enjoyed building this mini-scene. I’ll probably do the engine room next.
